CAMPUS

INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO

Space r-evolution.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Lifestyle, art, and design research in Milan is used to develop an interior space plan. Studio work and field trips foster the conceptual development of possible interior layouts resulting in one original interior space design.
The course is intended for students with an initial understanding and experience in Interior Design with the intention of further stimulating their knowledge and skills. This course, taking place in Milan, is about the comprehension of interior living spaces and the perception of them through the Italian style and design point of view.
The course will introduce students to a peculiar form of experience: being a designer means being author of a portion of space that interacts with the Whole.
The point of view of any designer is a deforming mirror that records the world outside in the shape of our next projects.
A walk through this “alchemy”, is the aim of this course.
Interior designers must develop a deep sensitivity on the lifestyles of both mass and individuals. Making a project means dealing with the dimension of the city and the time of public and private living, listening to the background noise that walks on our side in opposition to our private pods. Our aim is seeking “talking wallpapers” to surround our bodies.
Interior means intimate: it depends on the distance from our sensorial devices.
This distance is measurable, and, from a materialistic point of view, consistent.
During the first phase students will be free to express their own research by means of any technique, hand drawing, digital graphics, movie, etc.
The contribution of digital media will help students to control the process and collect all the impressions. This material will become a real tool, capable of memorizing and reproducing step by step the knowledge gained throughout this experience.
Working with a digital camera will help students to process and re-organize materials.
The results of this experience will be collected and shown by students in their personal notebooks.
Students must edit their personal notebooks during the course with the aim of collecting several impressions, ideas, drawings, photos, etc.
There are manifold possibilities: from sketches to paper clipping and paintings. Title, keywords and little text are important to describe drawings and the rest of materials collection.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

- Analyzing contemporary interior spaces through observation based on personal research; in this phase the ability to discover the design value in the city of Milan - thereby showing a personal sensibility to hunt the wealth of public and private space – will play a relevant role.
- Developing an attitude similar to that of professional designers, acting and searching for materials as a source for inspiration through the city exploration, taking personal notes and drawings, pictures, writing text ideas and so on.
- Based on personal research and course guidelines, developing a project with a physical model of interior layout, using only regenerated or discarded material with the aim of stressing the ability to interpret and represent spaces and environments in a quick, easy and very effective way, to support concept generation and project proportion.
- Final results will be presented in a sort of class exhibition, with the support of a booklet and a short digital slide show.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Students will have to be motivated and curious, ready to work individually and in group. Active participation in the seminars and studios will be highly profitable for the students. Drawing (by hand and/or digitally) and model-making skills are required. In general the level of education should be equivalent or higher than the second year of college studies (BA) in Interior/Product/Industrial Design.
Students that already participated in the previous introduction level course (July 5th -July 16th) will be admitted to this course. In this case, they should be ready and flexible to manage an upper level, sharing with designers the experience and the process of design work.

OUTPUT
